Portrait of Mengmeng Luo

Mengmeng Luo is a third-year Ph.D. Candidate in Soil Science at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Her research explores how subsequent fires and post-fire translocation influence soil pyrogenic carbon stocks and properties across soil depths under different fire regimes in Wisconsin. Her work integrates soil biogeochemical analyses, laboratory and field-based heat flux measurements, and carbon modeling to better understand the fate and persistence of fire-derived carbon in soils.

Before pursuing soil science, Mengmeng received broad training in agroecosystems through a B.S. in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems and a M.S. in Agroecology, which continue to shape her interdisciplinary approach to research.

Beyond science, Mengmeng is also into arts. She completed an Art Studio minor during her undergraduate studies and continues to create art for her community. In her free time, she enjoys drawing, photography, and attending live performances, including musicals, plays, and concerts.
