Amy Koike is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in the Computer Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on robotic expressivity, with a special interest in how the physical aspects of robots enhance their expressive capabilities. With a diverse background in graphic and mechanical design and human-robot interaction, Amy has led pioneering work on using embodied, physical social cues in robotics. Her recent project, Sprout—a soft, flexible robot designed to “stretch and squash” beyond the limits of rigid robotics—earned the Best Design Paper award at the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction. Outside of research, Amy is passionate about art, creating illustrations, abstract paintings, and photography.
